Some very extraordinary people introduced us for the first time to these wonderful animals. We would like to acknowledge and thank Merle Pacey, Bob Peacock and Susan Pacey of
Alpacas of Napa Valley, for all of their time, information and guidance that they so generously shared with us. We could not have experienced a more pleasurable introduction to the world of alpacas. The enthusiasm and wisdom they imparted were very key in our decision to pursue an alpaca ranch of our own.
In the weeks and months that followed, we observed alpaca behavior at
several other Ranches. We discovered their individual personalities. We learned about nutrition, health-maintenance and environmental upkeep. We were fortunate to be present and witness the amazing birth of our first cria. We got to help during shearing week and learned what all the excitement, organization and anticipation is about. In addition, a wonderful and generous opportunity to work at the ranch for a short period provided the benefit of learning the day-to-day operations. The "on the job" training was a priceless education. What better way to see for ourselves what the daily life of active alpaca breeders entailed?
To put the icing on the cake, we learned that a good portion of what makes the alpaca industry so inviting, are the breeders themselves. Long-term support is important and appreciated. In this industry, quality doesn't pertain only to alpacas, but also to the people you meet, the relationships you cultivate and the friendships you make along the way.
